Mergers

... Merger and acquisition activity continued to decline in 2009 after breaking a trend of three consecutive years of M&A growth in 2008. After the amount of deals closed decreased 8.5% in 2008, 2009 brought an annual drop of approximately 37.9% in the total number of mergers and acquisitions recorded by The Food Institute. The sharp decline in mergers and acquisitions represents not only the screeching halt that many firms came to in their dealing, but also the shifting markets and categories that many pursued.

This chapter is based on data from The Food Institute's comprehensive Food Business Mergers & Acquisitions, 2010 which provides detailed analysis on the 322 mergers and acquisitions recorded in 2010. To purchase the complete 162 page study, click here.
